The image of Black nationalists is radically changing. In the past Black leaders uniformly submitted to a code of conduct and appearance. Today an increasing number of individuals who consider themselves Black freedom fighters are eviscerating righteous tradition. Instead of appearing before our people dressed to impress and speaking in an eloquent, effective manner, we are getting battered with the opposite. Baseball caps, sports gear and horrendously foul language, including the use of the N-word, are becoming the norm on the lecture circuit and social media.
We can blame the modern minstrel art form called Hip-Hop for our current state of affairs within the Black conscious community. Many of our otherwise capable leaders are abdicating their responsibility to be righteous and decent. Instead of building on the legacies of our golden ancestors who gave everything so that Black people could advance, these characters have deemed it more important to be hip (hop).
In the final analysis, behavior is not simply an individual affair, for when multiplied by thousands, it has profound effects on the life, future existence and well being of the total people. - Dr Frances Cress Welsing
