There are too many Black people who falsely believe that we have made tremendous progress since the Civil Rights movement of the late 1950s. Many of us also believe that white supremacy is not as prevalent today as it was during our enslavement. Our mental and spiritual suffering since being conquered by caucasians far exceeds the brutal physical suffering we've endured. It is evident from the current beliefs, behaviors, and views of Afrikan people that we have turned against ourselves. Self-hatred is often perceived as an individual issue rather than an issue that affects our entire race. Moreover, Black people have developed a self-centered view of the world, focusing on their individual advancement rather than our race's progress. Our esteemed elder, Baba Lumumba (Umoja House), says, Self-centeredness and greed are the important foundations of american society [...], and Black people have internalized this approach to life. As a result, Black people remain at the bottom of every relevant statistical scale.
Many intelligent people analyze the myriad of issues negatively affecting Black people and do a commendable job of describing problems like anti-Black violence, drug abuse, miseducation, and broken families. However, ignorance and fear prevent most from accurately exposing the root causes of our problems, which impedes race progress.
Afrikans have a higher purpose than the one imposed on us through european oppression.
- Baba Lumumba, Umoja House
